MASUA |
IGLESIAS, CARBONIA-IGLESIAS, SARDINIA |
Not far from Nebida at the end of the paved road, stands the village of Masua with some miners homes lying in the middle of the green on slopes protected by massive stone, and a small bay with a beach facing the imposing island of Sugar Loaf. The dirt road then continues to the entrance of the mine of Porto Flavia.
Porto Flavia is a facility for the transportation of minerals, made in 1924 by engineer Cesare Vecelli (who gave it the name of his eldest daughter, Flavia) to tackle the high cost of transporting ore extracted from mines in the area. The work was done by digging the mountain for about 600 meters, at the base of two superimposed galleries a conveyor received minerals from underground deposits by transferring them directly into the holds of cargo ships at anchor. |
