NEBIDA
IGLESIAS, CARBONIA-IGLESIAS, SARDINIA

Along the coastal road that from Iglesias and Gonnesa leads to the small mining towns of Nebida and Masua, and the mine of Porto Flavia, you can admire one of the most charming coastal scenery in Sardinia. Built in the 19th century to the exploitation of mineral deposits, Nebida and Masua are found along the coast, in a particularly beautiful landscape, which is dominated by the characteristic Sugar Loaf, a limestone island 133 meters high which is right in front of Porto Flavia. The islet of the Sugar Loaf with the rocks of "Il Morto", "S'Agusteri", and other small rocks and with the cliffs of "Punta de Is Cicalas", have been declared a natural monument.

Nebida preserves the remains of the washery Lamarmora. From the village of Nebida begins a circular scenic path with breathtaking views over the coast and over the remains of the washery Lamarmora, from the way we see the whole coast northward up the rock of Sugar Loaf. From the scenic path can be achieved by a very long staircase the remains of the washery Lamarmora, located in a picturesque location along the coast of Nebida, it was built in 1897 by the “Società anonima di Nebida” and used until the mid 30s. It is a building constructed of stone that is spread over several volumes overlapping, traversed by large arches, the structure is completed by two tall chimneys, at the foot of the washery, on the sea, are visible the furnaces of calcination.

We are in the middle of the Geomineral Park of Sulcis Iglesiente, an area of 2,455 square km which is part of the Geo-Mineral Park of Sardinia, it was designed to protect the heritage of technical, cultural and environmental aspects of mining areas of Sardinia. The area of Sulcis Iglesiente, is among those included in the Park, the largest and most representative for variety and importance of mining operations that have been held there, in fact, was one of the major mining districts of western Europe, were mined here lead, zinc, copper, silver, tin, iron and coal.
